Romance, Architecture and
Coming Home!
Four new exhibitions open at Linden – St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts on Thursday May 31 at 6pm.
In Gallery One Scottish artist, Samantha Clark, contemplates her recent feelings of geographic displacement in Trying to come home an exhibition of two installation based works which use light, sound, movement and space.
Geneine Honey and Nicholas Chilvers' digital self portraits and reformatted fashion images in their Do you know what he did? (Gallery Two) place the ideal of romance securely within the context of consumer ideology.
Square, Round or Arched: Windows on Walls on Walls – by "hanging" additional windows in Gallery Three and a weatherboard wall in Gallery Five, Josie Fagan raises ideas about interior, exterior and our fear of exposure.
New Work by Richard Grigg in Gallery Four combines his cultural, architectural and geographical travel experiences with an interest in Egyptian iconography and the craftsmanship of model making.
All exhibitions continue until Sunday 24 June.
Gallery hours are: Tuesday – Sunday 1.00pm – 6.00pm

REMOTE SENSING
thoughts on art and travel
by exhibiting artists, Samantha Clark and Richard Grigg
2pm Sunday 24 June
Linden - St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts
26 Acland Street, St Kilda
followed by coffee and cake at Veludo
On a six month term as Artist-in-Residence at the Tasmanian School of Art, Scottish artist, Samantha Clark was struck by the familiarity of cultural references in Australia, but equally displaced by particular differences which often sprung from the natural, as opposed to the cultural environment. Samantha will talk about how her recent work focuses on this experience of geographic displacement and how one navigates an uncertain route between homing instinct and roaming curiosity.
Richard Grigg's Memories of Australia in Gallery 4 is the result of interests shaped during a period of extensive travel through Western Europe (which included taking up residence in Edinburgh for 15 months), Egypt, Greece and America before landing in Darwin and undertaking a car journey back to Melbourne. He will talk about his intricate sarcophagus-like sculpture and the mystical cultural landmarks which it contains.
Cost: $5
