EXHIBITIONS 19 October - 11 November, 2001

Six new exhibitions open at Linden St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts on Friday 19 October at 6pm.

Stockpile in Gallery One is a collaborative project between Mandy Gunn and Susan Kneebone which pursues the theme of eco-imperialism in the form of a site installation incorporating discarded metal fence posts, clay, wood, horns, emu eggs, tacks and natural materials.

Recent recipient of the 2001 Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship, Grant Hill, presents Scenes from an Australian Garden (Gallery Two), a series of paintings using earth pigment and acrylic binder on linen and which through the use of garden imagery explores issues relating to land and culture.

Irianna Kanellopoulou's clay sculptures in The White Show (Gallery Three) explore issues of play and transience. A repetition of glances, poses and shapes create a unifying effect in some pieces while a quiet solitude and isolation is expressed in others.

In Lex Middleton's ALIEN PELTS: The Secret Work of Dr. T Lepneila (Gallery Four) a previously hidden history of alien life has been unearthed for public display. Viewers must decipher elements of this museum style 'mockumentary' installation in order to ascertain their own sense of its authenticity.

Envelop by Louise Saxton in Gallery Five is inspired by the richly laden traditions of the western quilt and decorative patterning traditions in eastern architecture. Using recycled patterned envelopes embossed with lace patterning she 'clothes' the space and envelops the viewer within.

Presented by Experimenta and curated by Julie Shiels, Memory Packs (cabinets) is one of a number of site specific installations at various locations in the City of Port Phillip which contain items that trigger very personal stories, or stories about our community, people or places.

All exhibitions continue until Sunday 11 November
Gallery hours are: Tuesday Sunday 1.00pm 6.00pm

MEDIA RELEASE: A Big Bang at Linden!

The ARTICULATE program, a series of events presented by Gasworks Arts Park, Linden St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts and Theatreworks, concludes with a Big Bang at Linden from 7-9pm Thursday 18 October.

The Big Bang is a special evening of art, entertainment and cocktails at which you can preview Linden's latest exhibitions, enjoy a variety of performances and mingle with artists, actors, musicians and other guests in the grand surrounds of a Victorian mansion.

The evening's entertainment includes roving music from Born in a Taxi, Dada poetry from Razor Cutler, a 20min opera from OzOpera and a few surprises!

OzOpera will be performing their new Remembering Rosie, a celebration of St Kilda's Fitzroy Street. At the end of WW2, Rosie, a prostitute of middle-European origin, works from her trinket-cluttered apartment in St Kilda, escaping into memory-scenes from her youth and marriage before returning to work. Dimity Shepherd and Ian Cousins play the major roles accompanied by piano, string quartet and clarinet.

Tickets to the Big Bang are $50 and can be booked by calling Linden on 9209 6794 or emailing admin@lindenarts.org
