EXHIBITIONS 9 August - 1 September, 2002

August Shows at Linden

Five new exhibitions open at Linden on Thursday 8 August at 6pm.

Andrew Goodman's Hive in Gallery 1 features imposing organic felt forms with metal "skeletons" which inhabit the gallery space and evoke creatures in hibernation, in breeding chambers or quietly undertaking some sort of metamorphosis.

The exhibition, Head of State by Simon Cuthbert in Gallery 2, consists of a series of photographic images that articulate a journey through the arcane physical and psychological spectacle of China's capital city.

In Map by Izabela Pluta in Gallery 3 a giant footprint embedded on paper becomes a personal reference of a time and a place and speaks of dislocation, movement, travel and past forgotten events.

Illumination is both a physical and philosophical result of civilization's rise. Illuminations by Aaron Fenwick in Gallery 4 is a photographic installation comprising photographic prints, light boxes and installed lighting.

Drawing on the tradition of allegory, a mode of discourse which enables conflicting languages to co-exist, Caroline Durréin Foreshadow (Gallery 5), creates an internal façade in a sequence of images incorporating digital imaging and printmaking.

All exhibitions continue until Sunday 1 September 2002
Gallery hours are: Tuesday – Sunday 1.00pm – 6.00pm

Nick Cave: The Good Son is on show at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery from 6 August - 15 September 2002. Using Jenny Watson's 1977 portraits of 'The Boys Next Door', as a starting point, this exhibition examines some of the connections, affinities and collaborations between Nick Cave and other contemporary Australian artists from the 1970s to the present day.

The exhibition opens with Melbourne's punk scene with its fusion of art, music, film and fashion. Then, as now, resident St Kilda artists (including Watson, Jenny Bannister, Jon Cattapan and Greg Ades) played a large part in the story of Melbourne's music-based underbelly, frequenting venues such as the Crystal Ballroom and pushing creative boundaries through their art. The work of these and other St Kilda based artists is featured in the exhibition, alongside original art works and lyrics by Cave himself.
