Five new exhibitions open at Linden Thursday 18 September at 6pm
Surveillance comes under scrutiny in Panoptic Division, in
Gallery 1 by Darren Gunstone. Curtains, closed circuit cameras
and x-ray vision projectors form part of this installation in which art mimics
life in a humorous investigation of the way in which surveillance informs
contemporary understanding of space, truth and history.
Mmm Pop,
in Gallery 2, is the manifestation of
Katherine Jacob's obsession with lollies as icons of popular culture.
These multiple, object based, ceramic works can be read simultaneously as
friendly, familiar and menacing.
Natasha Carrington's Daisy Cutter, comments on the
narrative of weaponry, constructed under the US military umbrella for the
purpose of global security. Black sand and hybrid forms will transform
Gallery 3, into a post war desert, to reveal the euphemisms that
refer to weapons of mass destruction as harmless garden tools.
Waratah Lahy's oil paintings, combining board and beer cans,
draw on subjects from childhood photographs, stock competitions and found
imagery.
Tourist Complex in Gallery 4, is a humorous take on
the portrayal of Australian animals as totems of mateship, humour, pride
and the battler mentality.
Natalie Kosnar's Fast Cars Fast Women inhabit
Gallery 5 in the form of small format layered glass images that
challenge gender stereotypes, the male gaze and the links between women
and consumerism.
All exhibitions continue until Sunday 19 October.
Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday 1.00pm – 6.00pm.
