2004 Postcard Show Winner
Angela Casey - "Monkey on Hog"
The 2004 Postcard Show 1st Prize, the Hocking Stuart Award of $3,000, has been won by Angela Casey for her painting Monkey on Hog, one of 3 works submitted by Ms Casey. The images are based on Edwardian picture books for children. Ms Casey says she enjoys the “Victorian playful naughtiness” of such literature. When asked how she felt when her name was announced as the winner Ms Casey replied,

"Really stunned. I am absolutely elated to receive this kind of recognition after working so hard over the last 15 - 20 years. It's great to have my work acknowledged in this way."

The 2nd Prize, the Dog’s Bar Award of $1,000 went to Sarah McAlister for her work (re) grow, a delicate piece of threadwork on paper. 3rd Prize of $750 worth of art materials from Art Spectrum Finest Colours went to Simon Cuthbert for Untitled I (from the Observe Nature series) for his photograph of park benches.

Ms Kelly Gellatly, Senior Curator, National Gallery of Victoria, who was one of the judges of the 2004 Postcard Show said,

“"Linden's Posctard Show has become an institution and it has been a delight to judge this years' exhibition."

As in the past, the works on reveal a diversity of subject matter and medium. In addition to the major prize winners, six works were also chosen to be reproduced as Postcards, which is where the show gets its name. These works are sure to be popular as they depict scenes as varied as a deserted street in Moonee Ponds to a stuffed chipmunk.

Winning entries including the six works chosen to be reproduced as Linden postcards can be viewed on Linden’s website.

"It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else"
Henri Matisse

Linden - St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts is looking for artists who 'don't paint like anybody else' to enter the 2004 Postcard Show. Entry Forms are now available for this annual show which attracted over 2,000 entries and 9,000 visitors in 2003.

This year you’ll find entry forms as well as posters for the 2004 Postcard Show on Yarra Trams so all those commuting artists can start filling in their entry form on the tram! St Kilda and its trams have been a constant inspiration for many of the artists who have entered work in the Postcard Show over the last 12 years and as one of the only open entry award exhibitions left in Australia you are guaranteed a spot on the gallery wall.

The Postcard Show has consistently attracted a wide variety of artists, printmakers, photographers and sculptors. So whatever your media and whatever your style if you enter you have a chance to win the Hocking Stuart 1st Prize of $3,000, Dogs Bar 2nd Prize of $1,000 while 3rd prize is $750 worth of art material from Art Spectrum Finest Colours. In addition 6 works are selected to be reproduced as Linden Postcards.

Judges for the 2004 Postcard Show are Kelly Gellatly, Senior Curator, National Gallery of Victoria; Irene Sutton, Director of Sutton Gallery and David Rosetsky, an artist who is currently included in the Face Up - Contemporary Art from Australia exhibition, curated by Dr Britta Schmitz at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin's major contemporary art space.

The Postcard Show is open to all Australian residents. Artists may enter up to four art works and the only restriction is that the works measure no more than 30 x 30 x 30 cm.

For further information about the Postcard Show 2004, please phone Amy Barrett-Lennard, Director (03) 9209 6794 fax 03 9525 4607 email info@lindenarts.org

IT'S RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW - IT'S THE INSIDE RUNNING - IT'S THE WORD ON THE STREET - IT'S...

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

BOOZE
BLUES
BOHEMIA

Since the 1850s, when the Elsternwick Hotel and the Terminus (now The George) Hotel, St Kilda, opened their doors, hotels and clubs have provided meeting places - official and unofficial - for the people of the area. They have thrown together artists, writers, performers and musicians; spawned cultural and epicurean revolutions; and inspired community activism and politics. They have hosted performers famous and infamous, from Vanessa the Undresser to Iggy Pop, and housed such luminaries as philanthropist Alfred Felton and writer Hal Porter.

"Booze, Blues, Bohemia" is a virtual pub crawl through this fascinating past. Gazing from the front bar or through the bottom of a glass, stories will flow and memories surface as we consider the contribution of our local hotels to life in St Kilda and its neighbouring suburbs. The evening will be chaired by noted historian and one-time barmaid Clare Wright, whose groundbreaking study of AustraliaÕs female publicans, Beyond the Ladies Lounge, was published in 2003.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Jon Cattapan is a noted Australian artist whose Melbourne Panels, commissioned for the National Gallery of Victoria, have just been unveiled. He has lived, worked and played in St Kilda for many years, including formative years around St Kilda's early 80's punk scene.

Dave Graney is a self-described stud thinker, heavy entertainer, maker and purveyor of highly enriched music, lyrical magician and master of time itself. His bands, including the Moodists and the Coral Snakes, have played many of St Kilda's celebrated venues.

Kate Shaw was swept into community politics in the mid 1980s, juggling theatre and festival work with campaigns supporting cultural diversity and participation in planning, most notably through the Esplanade Alliance. She now teaches in the faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne.

Gillian Upton is a local historian whose book The George: St Kilda Life and Times won the 2002 Victorian Community History Award.

Graham Willett is the author of Living Out Loud, a history of the gay and lesbian movement in Australia. His longstanding interest in Melbourne's gay and lesbian history has inevitably drawn him to the south side of the Yarra from time to time.
