Skylab - out of orbit
Dave Carson - Brian McClave - George Millward
Opens at Linden
6pm Friday 15 October 2004
It seems that things that fall to earth
inspire an array of interesting responses in us: fear, curiosity,
anger, awe and that age-old feeling that we may not be totally
alone in the universe.
Skylab - out of orbit, is a
multi-disciplinary collaborative exhibition between Perth based
artist Dave Carson, international video artist Brian McClave and
ex NASA atmospheric physicist and electronic musician George
Millward.
Featuring paintings, a 3D video with
accompanying sound scape and digital image projections that can
be viewed through polarised 3D glasses, Skylab focuses on
events that took place at two remote sites in Western Australia,
and the relics of those extra-terrestrial visitations.
The two sites, Wolfe Creek Crater where a
giant meteorite landed over 300,000 years ago and Esperance, the
site of the fallout from Skylab in 1979, became a matrix
connecting the ancient with the modern, the poetic with the
scientific and the real with the imagined.
This 3D stereoscopic video installation
draws from hard facts, evidence, scientific readings and recorded
myths, stories and beat-ups. It is a gentle and poetic
exploration of our curiosity, ingenuity and desire to make sense
of what surrounds us.
Public programs include:
- A floortalk by artist Dave Carson
with a special screening of 2 additional 3D video works
by Carson, McClave and Millward on Sunday 17 October at
3pm;
- A conversation between Chris Ellis,
Founding President of the Astrological Society of
Melbourne and Dave Carson at 6.30pm Thursday 11 November.
