Small and intriguing work scoops 1st prize at 2006 Linden Postcard Show
While the sun shone overhead and
Dave Graney's mellow music wafted over the rooftops thousands of
people flocked to the opening of the 2006 Linden Postcard Show.
But for artist Cecilia Fogelberg the day was particularly
memorable as she learnt that her work titled Two headed Boy
Making A Decision had earned her the 1st Prize Bendigo Bank
Award of $5,000.
Fogelberg's winning work, which
has already been purchased by a discerning art collector, stands
less than 30 cm high and could almost pass for a child's toy yet,
as the title suggests, there is a lot more going on here.
"The boy is like a
mythological character for today's society" says
Fogelberg "he can be seen as a visualized metaphor."
The piece came about after the artist overheard a
conversation between a father and his 13 year old daughter
warning her that men have 2 heads and that she should be aware
which head was actually the one doing the thinking.
"I was exploring the idea
of what it meant to have 2 heads. We all make decisions based on
either a conscious or unconscious process and must live with the
consequences. The piece is also about the intellect versus basic
instinct and we all make choices based on either of the two."
Fogelberg, who will use the prize
money to make more art, is busy preparing for a group exhibition
at Linden in May 2006. She is definitely an artist to watch.
The Dog's Bar 2nd Prize of $2,000
was awarded to well known artist Jon Campbell for his work Yeah.
This work echoes Campbell's flags that currently appear in an
exhibition at the Ian Potter Museum of Art as part of the
Commonwealth Games cultural program. It's the ultimate
'feel-good' painting.
Winner of the 3rd Prize and $1,000
worth of art materials from Arts Spectrum Finest Colours was
painter Mark Ogge for his untitled work, a highly atmospheric
piece which depicts a circus tent at night.
Works by Megan McDonald, Valerie
Sparks, Christian Ghezzi, Sally Ross, Sally Rossiter and Jamie
Boys were selected by the judges to be reproduced and sold as
Linden postcards. Each artist also receives $250.
The only winner yet to be
announced is the inaugural Bendigo Bank People's Choice Award
which will be announced at the end of the exhibition on 13 March
2006. Now that's going to be interesting given there are some
1800 works from which to choose!
Whether you are a traditionalist,
a minimalist, a post-modernist or just curious you will find a
work of art that appeals and, with entries
from nearly 1,000 artists from across Australia, The Postcard
Show provides an intriguing insight into the artistic state of a
nation.
Now in its 15th year and more
popular than ever the Postcard Show will be opened to the public
at 2pm Saturday 4 February by Kristy Edmunds, Artistic Director
of the 2006 Melbourne International Arts Festival. Kristy is both
an artist and curator and, like Linden, is a leading advocate for
furthering innovative and provocative contemporary art.
In 2006 for the first time, thanks
to the generous support of the show's Principal Sponsor Bendigo
Bank, a People's Choice Award will be introduced as part of the
prize pool. The People's Choice Award will give the art loving
public the chance to cast a vote for their favorite work in the
show and go in the draw to win a $1,000 transaction
account with Bendigo Bank. The creator of the most popular work
will also be awarded a $1,000 Bendigo Bank account. Both prizes
will be awarded at the conclusion of the show.
The Postcard Show is an open entry
competition where all work entered is exhibited and for sale. It
always provides a great opportunity to buy small and affordable
contemporary art. You might buy a work of art by an emerging
artist and, in five years time, discover it has become a
profitable investment!
This year the show features nearly
1,800 individual works, all no bigger than 30 x 30 x 30 cm, by
artists ranging from the well established such as Jon Campbell,
Penny Davis, Greg Ades and John Neeson to the up and coming like
Jessie Angwin, Kate Rohde, Michelle Ussher and Valerie Sparks.

Bendigo Bank People's Choice Award goes to artist Anna Maria O'Keefe
Anna Maria O'Keefe's wall mounted sculpture titled Headland - Dystopia series,
was selected from the 1,758 other artworks in this year's Postcard Show as the People's Choice winner.
The work represents a green grassy escarpment - a small fragment of a once larger land mass. The artist
describes the lonesome little signs standing on the headland as 'beacons, warning of navigational hazard,
perhaps some submerged danger that we don't see on the surface, or maybe even something so obvious that
its hanging right under our nose'.
It is the first time that a People's Choice Award, sponsored by Bendigo Bank, has been included in the
program. Linden's Director, Amy Barrett-Lennard said this year's exhibition was a huge success with almost
1,000 artists entering and 6,600 people attending. "The People's Choice Award was a successful addition to
the show and provides further recognition of the work of our talented artists."
The voter's prize went to Pamela M Graham who won a $1000 Bendigo Bank account for simply attending the
exhibition and casting a vote.
The Postcard Show offers emerging and established artists a chance to display their work in a friendly
environment and to a broad audience. Entries in this year's show came from all over Australia, and displayed
a diverse range of subjects and media.
Bendigo Bank Corporate Affairs General Manager Owen Davies said the Bank was pleased with the outcome of
this year's Awards, and in particular the success of the People's Choice Awards. "The Linden Postcard Show
provides an important outlet for Australia's artists to display their work and Bendigo Bank is proud to be
associated with the gallery and annual exhibition," Mr Davies said.
Bendigo Bank is Principal Sponsor of the 2006 Linden Postcard Show.

Collecting Art : For Love or Money?
Linden - St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts
Tuesday 14 February 2006 6.00pm -
8.00pm
Why do people collect art?
Can a hobby turn into an investment - or an addiction?
What constitutes a collection?
And what kind of collection can you build with a limited budget?
Karen Woodbury and Judith Gorr
will tackle these questions, and more at Linden's first public
program for 2006.
Karen Woodbury has worked
in the arts industry for 15 years with experience in commercial
galleries and auction houses. She was the Director of Paintings
& Assistant Auctioneer at Deutscher Menzies Fine Art
Auctioneers from 1998 - 2001. In 2004 she established the Karen
Woodbury Gallery representing Australian artists such as Lisa
Roet, Elizabeth Kroger and Michael Doolan. In 2006 Karen plans to
include the work of international artists in her exhibition
program.
Judith Gorr, is a Barrister
and self proclaimed art addict who started to collect Australian
art over 20 years ago and regularly purchases works from the Linden
Postcard Show. Judith's collecting is not motivated by
any discernable or plausible purpose, agenda or concern, although
her taste, choice and style have undeniably changed over the last
20 years due to ongoing formal and informal education. Her art
collection is contemporary and apart from three works entirely
Australian.

Artists Mean Business: An
information session for artists about money
Linden - St Kilda
Centre for Contemporary Arts
Thursday 2 March 2006 6 - 8pm
A forum with artists Harriet
Parsons and Ry Haskings aimed at assisting artists to develop a
healthy and informed approach to managing their finances. The
discussion takes into account the historical relationship between
artists and money - how artists have survived in the past, their
position and role in society and how conditions have changed.
Harriet Parsons is an
artist who has been exhibiting in Sydney and Melbourne since
1996. She is currently working on a project to develop
educational resources in money management for artists. The result
of this project is a forthcoming book called The Money
Manager, which offers practical information to artists on the
skills and strategies for dealing with the day-to-day problems of
making ends meet.
Ry Haskings is a young
contemporary artist whose broad artistic practice includes
national and international solo and group exhibitions, both in
galleries and on the street. He is a member of Damp Artist
Collective and has had several private commissions for his wall
installations. Ry also works in other capacities within the arts
industry, including teaching Business Art Practice at Swinburne
University.
