Public Programs

8 July - 13 August, 2006

Opened 6-8pm Friday 7 July, 2006

James Lynch, Sean Meilak, Viv Miller, Jonathan Nichols, Lisa Radford, Michelle Ussher
Curated by Jan Duffy & Kate Barber

An exhibition of recent work by contemporary painters who use this traditional medium in new and vital ways, ways that reflect the digital age in which we live. Experimenting with the pictorial space and notions of normality, these artists offer a cool but celebratory reflection of our time. They use a hands-on approach that honours the historical practices of painting, design, technical drawing and botanical illustration.

The dream state, the uncertainty of memory and the unconscious interconnections between individuals have been ongoing themes in James Lynch's practice. In this series of fractured narratives James continues to archive and visually recreate the earliest memories of his friends.

A world of impossible beauty, community and lifestyle is reflected in the works of Sean Meilak. The artist uses friends and acquaintances as his models and his working process sees him inhabit the multiple roles of casting agent, director and filmmaker.

Viv Miller plays with pictorial space and perspective. Using a technique of layering oil, enamel, acrylic and pencil on canvas, the artist's work draws a balance between romantic imaginings and futuristic graphics.

Sifting the proliferation of imagery in contemporary society, Jonathan Nichols re-presents and elevates found images as the subjects of his paintings. Notions of voyeurism aside, his cool yet curiously intimate paintings draw our attention to the human posture.

Lisa Radford presents uncanny images of young people bedecked in a selection of bizarre costumes and headgear. Seemingly unaware that anything out of the ordinary is taking place, Lisa's figures inhabit a kind of surreal netherworld of hybrid species, where body parts morph and mutate.

Drawing on the traditions of botanical illustration Michelle Ussher presents large-scale representations of the landscape. Michelle says: "I would rather see only beautiful things in the world. However within each one of them is a truth linked to the simple journey of human destruction."

3pm Sunday 13 August 2006

Reflections in a Golden Eye is an exhibition of recent work by contemporary artists who use the traditional medium of painting in new and vital ways, ways that reflect the digital age in which we live.

Join art critic and commentator Ashley Crawford in a dynamic discussion with exhibiting artists James Lynch, Viv Miller, Jonathan Nichols, Lisa Radford and Michelle Ussher. The artists will discuss their working practice and ideas with Ashley and share their thoughts on contemporary painting.

The dream state, the uncertainty of memory and the unconscious interconnections between individuals is an ongoing theme in the work of James Lynch. In this series he re-creates the earliest memories of his friends. James is a founding member of collaborative art group DAMP; his work was included in DRAWN from the Collection, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2005.

Viv Miller's work draws a balance between romantic imaginings and futuristic graphics. Viv will discuss her working technique and the way in which her practice challenges and plays with pictorial space and perspective. Her work was recently included in NEW06 at ACCA, Melbourne.

Sifting the proliferation of imagery in contemporary society, Jonathan Nichols elevates found images as the subjects of his paintings. Jonathan will discuss his recent work and the inspiration behind his coolly detached paintings. His work recently featured in the exhibition New Objectivity at Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne, 2006.

Bedecked in bizarre costumes or headgear, the people in Lisa Radford's paintings seem unaware that anything is out of the ordinary. We will be introduced to the strange and surreal subjects who inhabit her work. Lisa is a member of collaborative art group DAMP. Her work was recently part of A Portable Model of..., at La Trobe Regional Gallery, Morwell, 2006.
