Exhibitions at Linden 10 NOVEMBER - 17 DECEMBER 2006
Five new Innovators Exhibitions opened at Linden Centre for
Contemporary Arts
Thursday 9 November 2006
STILL/MOVING - YVETTE COPPERSMITH & JACQUI STOCKDALE
GALLERY 1
What goes on behind the closed doors of the studios? Da Vinci and
the Mona Lisa; Vermeer and the girl with the pearl earring -
these stories still resonate today. The history of portraitature
is filled with stories about the artist's relationship with their
subject. Taking this as a starting point Yvette Coppersmith and
Jacqui Stockdale will recreate the theatrics of the sitter and
artist. The installation will be made up of portrait paintings
and photographs that will sit alongside a tableau vivant - a
living painting, of an artist's studio, with an artist and model
working in the space. >more...
HEIMWEH - AMANDA MARBURG, JULIA ROBINSON & FELICITY MANGAN
GALLERY 2
In the 21st century is there nothing left to conquer and nowhere
else to go in the search for the exotic? This collaborative work
considers landscape painting and its use in history as a
projection of an ideal, epitomised by the 19th Century's romantic
symbolism of man against the vastness of nature. In this
performance/installation heimweh is experienced as an oxymoronic
state; a longing for home while at the same time longing to
explore the unknown. >more...
FELT IS THE PAST TENSE OF FEEL - CATHERINE BELL GALLERY 3
Catherine Bell's video explores the idea of repressed emotion and
why we are conditioned to "suck it up" and not scream.
Her performance shows the methodical and controlled action of
sucking the ink out of 40 squid and then spitting it onto the
pink felt suit she wears. It is this psychological struggle that
Bell captures, the tension between the mind replaying the
traumatic scenario of her father's death and the point at which
we decide to purge our emotion. >more...
THE END OF THE WORLD/UNTITLEDWALL DRAWING (for S.L.,L.G.,J.A.) - PAUL WRIGLEY GALLERY 4
Building on previous work that blurs the line between photography
and painting this new work by Paul Wrigley not only references
spray-can graffiti but also bears resemblance to advertising
illustrations. The airbrush is used for its effect of being able
to simultaneously emphasise and dissolve the surface it is being
painted on - in this case the gallery walls at Linden. >more...
PASSING THROUGH - REBECCA COOTE GALLERY 5
Rebecca Coote's interest is the critical integration of glass
within architectural form, and how the perception of strong and
stable structures can shift when viewed in reflection. Passing
Through is a site-specific installation that makes the most of
the domestic interior of Linden. It is part of a body of work
investigating utilitarian architectural spaces and our perception
of them. This installation looks at the architectural form of the
gallery and the passage it offers between two other rooms, as
well as the ornate doorframes that dominate this small gallery at
Linden. >more...
