LINDEN POSTCARD SHOW 2007

Thousands flocked to the opening of the Linden Postcard Show 2007 on Saturday 3 February.

Following the official opening by the former Minister for the Arts, Senator Rod Kemp, a queue of people, stretching from the door to the pavement out on Acland Street, lined up to see the 2,391 works inside the gallery.

Beatrice McDonald, a first time entrant is the winner of the 1st Prize Bendigo Bank Award worth $5,000. The work entitled 'I Wish I Was My Big Sister' is a photograph of McDonald's 6 year old younger sister.

McDonald is an Honours student at the Centre for Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at Monash University who hopes to become a professional photographer.

The work came about on a visit to her family, as McDonald explains. "The work is about the way we perform a mixture of identities, sometimes wanting to be someone else. When I visit my family in Dubbo I often sneak outside for a cigarette and my little sister follows me and then proceeds to mimic me, twig in hand. She is a natural performer and I just took the photos of her pretending to be all grown up."

McDonald's only other public art experience was as part of Colliding Worlds during the Next Wave Festival in 2004.

An intricate and delicate work "Contents" by Louise Rippert took out the Dogs Bar 2nd Prize of $2,000 and Jamie Boys, who had his work reproduced as a postcard in 2006, won the 3rd prize Art Spectrum Finest Artists Colours Award $1,000 worth of art materials.

The Bendigo Bank People's Choice Award will be announced at the end of the exhibition on 26 March 2007. So come in to Linden and vote for you favourite artwork and you, and the most popular artist, could be $1,000 richer thanks to Bendigo Bank.
