INNOVATORS 1 EXHIBITIONS
23 March - 22 April 2007
Opening 6-8pm Thursday 22 March
GALLERY 1 [FRONT] UNTITLED Anna Finlayson
A myriad of materials including pencil, gouache, Texta,
pastels, metalics and flouros are used here by Anna Finlayson to
create an illusion of depth and an optical quality that creates a
kind of vibrating weightlessness on the surface of the artwork.
This new body of work is a combination of the accumulation of
styles, techniques and influences developed over the last few
years of her practice and now infused with an interest in lucid,
organic form developed during the artist's residence in
rural France.

GALLERY 1 [REAR] UNTITLED Jan Berg
Abstract spatial constructions, intricately inscribed drawings
and delicate three-dimensional forms made from paper and mixed
media evolve from what the artist describes as a seismographic
process that references the random organic growth of cells that
eventually become recognisable as forms. Patterns and rhythms
beginning with a single unit, such as a point, dot or circle are
used repeatedly in an attempt to capture and quantify those
aspects of the universe that are impossible to know or perceive.
Through this labour intensive process patterns give rise to forms
which extend into a three dimensional format.

GALLERY 2 MEN OF PASSION Simon Obarzanek
This exhibition is the first part of a three-part project
comprising large-scale photographic colour portraits of
passionate men. The photographs capture the energy of an
individual whilst in a state of shared passion, in this case
singers in a barbershop choir. These men come together once a
week and sing with such ardour and joy that their faces become
distorted with emotion. Their energy levels are amplified as they
draw enthusiasm from one another, an enthusiasm that erupts into
a physical form that is captured in the single portrait of each
member.

GALLERY 4 YARDS PROJECT Tanja Kimme & Helen Grogan
Zeitraum: darkness falling is a collaboration between German
photographer Tanja Kimme and choreographer/installation artist
Helen Grogan. The project studies a series of Melbourne backyards
through night-time photography, compiled in an installation of
photo-collage and animated video. Both artists have recently
relocated from Europe to Melbourne - the project is approached
through this experience. Each object, surface and texture serves
as a clue to the specific narrative of the environment - the
private wilderness of the inner-suburban Melbourne back yard.

GALLERIES 3 & 5 X ANNIVERSARY Dorota Mytych
Through drawn and moving images that connect personal, social
and cultural issues Polish born artist Dorota Mytych reflects on
ten years of a personal journey as an Australian. With the
gallery in darkness a spotlight moves slowly across a charcoal
drawing of an iconic image (a jester) revealing the jester is
made up of a crowd of individual people drawn in minutae. The
video work consists of multiple dissolving and reforming images,
which are made from ground coffee on paper. By alternating the
images the artist attempts to create a compassionate reaction in
the viewer.
