Yards Project
2007
duratrans prints, animated video
Yards Project is a collaboration between German photographer, Tanja Kimme, and choreographer/artist, Helen Grogan. Both artists have recently relocated from Europe to Melbourne and the project has been approached through this experience. Relocating to a new city brings about a lucid awareness of the surroundings. The environment becomes dense with clues - every object, texture, and structure reveals something of the specific narrative of the place. The project studies a series of inner-suburban Melbourne backyards documented through night-time landscape photography.
Techniques of cut-out and collage have been used as strategies to dissect and reassemble each document. The outcome is a work of two parts; a 22-minute looped animated video, featuring 12 photographs, and 2 photo-collages composed of fragments from the entire series.
