My Doubtful Mind18 April - 25 May 2008 Soo-Joo YOO Hold Your Breath! uses electricity, heat and lights to illustrate the conflicting emotions: of anxiety versus desire, fear versus fascination. The idea for this work arose from the suffocating and oppressive feelings that characterize my experience of contemporary society, and the contradictory feelings of desire and fascination attached to the products of our environment. I have used materials such as gutter guards, vinyl, lights, aluminium pipes, hoses and rubber mats, to transform the gallery space into a giant electrical containment of heat and light, evoking ideas of incarceration, death and life. The lights are used as a metaphor for universal conflict and resistance while the electricity is used to evoke danger and fear. I have tried to demonstrate the chaotic noise of my mind; the space of struggle and resistance; and to question the unknown source of fear and feelings of anxiety I feel everyday.
