Harmonious Proportions
2008

This exhibition was conceived long distance, a discussion by instalment. As such Harmonious Proportions is both an introduction (a physical coincidence of the work in the space) and a farewell. The exhibition is the end of a conversation. This development process appears to have the structure of a comedy; we start out far apart and end up in the same room.

We have connected as strangers, a simple relationship. Maybe not. Strangers + time implies a narrative, which (we hope) has a happy ending, some sort of alliance that comes out of a previous remoteness. Again, a comedic structure. Which is good, coz we all make jokes.

We weren't really strangers when we started emailing. Simply put, there are similarities in the work. Here are some statements that apply to some of us some of the time:

We use found objects and readymades. We use text, or the suggestion of text. The work leans towards a denial of a maker/author. Sign writing rather than painting. Moving things around rather than sculpture. There is a "dumb" or "blank" relationship to materials, an engagement of the default mode. Our work suggests that we all seem to be products of post-minimalism/formalism critique with an interest in conceptual methods underpinned by a spatial and object preoccupation. We use humour in our work; sometimes dry, sometimes subtle, sometimes nonsense. We have agreed to develop this exhibition via various systems of communication; email, English, art, etc, etc., in an attempt to find Harmonious Proportions.
