Linden Postcard Show 2009

Exhibition dates: 7 February - 27 March 2009

HUNDREDS BRAVE HEAT WAVE TO HEAR POSTCARD WINNERS

Despite the hottest weather in history hundreds of people made their annual trek to the Linden Postcard Show to hear that a young Indigenous artist from Brisbane had won the Bendigo Bank 1st Prize of $5,000 in this year's Linden Postcard Show with a work judge Jarrod Rawlins, Director of Uplands Gallery, described as "being about ideas."

'Jingo All The Way' is representative of Tony Albert's recent body of work which explores ideas about representation, idols and freedom. A piece of vintage velvet material depicting an aboriginal man's face has been sprayed with the words 'jingo all the way'. Provoked by what the artist states as stereotypical representation of Indigenous Australians in mainstream culture, his ironic use of wordplay, paintings and wall based installations examine cultural alienation and displacement.

The Dog's Bar 2nd Prize valued at $4,000 ($2,000 cash and a dinner worth $2,000) was won by Sandra Eterovic for her sculptural work 'Neighbourhood Watch'. A suburban brick veneer house made of plywood has been meticulously painted and, above the roof, the head of Wayne Carey smiles benignly down on the scene. The work is an ironic comment on hero worship in the Australian suburbs.

Art Spectrum Finest Colours Award of $1,000 worth of art materials has been awarded to Stevan Jacks for his 'American Gothic #2' a Star Wars take on the classic American portrait which has achieved iconic pop culture status replacing the farmer and his wife with Darth Vadar and Princess Leah.

The Bendigo Bank People's Choice Award will be announced at the end of the exhibition on 27 March 2009. So come in to Linden and vote for you favourite artwork and you, and the most popular artist, could be $1,000 richer thanks to Bendigo Bank.
