The Linden Postcard show is an open entry award exhibition featuring small format contemporary work. The exhibition, which is part of the St Kilda Festival, has become a prominent event in the Melbourne cultural calendar and attracts thousands of visitors.

MEDIA RELEASE

Shower scene a winner!

Over 6,000 people visited Linden’s 2003 Postcard Show during its first weekend including a crowd of around 2,500 who gathered for the announcement of prize winners at the exhibition opening on the afternoon of Saturday 8 February.

The Judges, who included Patricia Piccini, Australia’s representative to the 2003 Venice Biennale, had a difficult task in choosing the winners from a record 2005 entries from 770 artists from all over Australia.

The 1st Prize, the Hocking Stuart Award of $3,000, went to Hedy Ritterman’s photograph of a shower scene. Hedy explained that “this photograph is the signature piece from a larger series of images that explore my cultural identity and reference the holocaust”.

2nd Prize, the Dog’s Bar Award of $1,000 went to Anna Hoyle for her work Neo Jumbucks #3 while the 3rd Prize of $750 worth of art materials from Art Spectrum Finest Colours went to Jennifer Mills for Secret Squirrel II.

The Postcard Show even rated a mention in Parliament when Michael Danby MHR, Federal Member for Melbourne Ports and a Postcard Patron, gave a speech about his involvement with the show. He was recorded as saying:

“On the weekend I had the opportunity to attend an important artistic institution in my electorate, the Linden Gallery, and the latest successful postcard exhibition……The creativity of Australian artists never ceases to amaze me. I am fortuntate to have an electorate that is very close to the artistic community and a very active institution the Linden Gallery is, too, in perpetuating and helping Australian artists

The Postcard Show always features the work of both emerging and established artists. This year’s show includes works by well known artists Jenny Watson, Greg Ades, Mandy Gunn, Susan Fereday, Greg Creek and Kristin Headlam.

All works in the 2003 Postcard Show are for sale with the majority of works priced under $300. The show runs until Sunday 16 March. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday 1.00 – 6.00pm.
