2005 Linden Postcard Show Prize Winners Announced

The winner of the 2005 Postcard Show 1st Prize Bendigo Bank Award of $5,000 is Louis Pratt for his sculpture The Ambassador’s Skull, a 3 dimensional epoxy resin print of a distorted human skull.

“Louis Pratt is a young Sydney based artist who works in an assortment of artistic mediums” says Libby Knott, Manager of Australian Galleries in Sydney who represent him.” A common thread throughout Pratt’s art would be his use of distortion to create intrigue. His sculptures are usually twisted, magnified or miniaturized. Nothing is ever really as it seems, and all of his works beg attention so as to discover their true intention. He has a penchant for the macabre, however, there is often a somewhat comical slant to the work, or, as in the case with his winning piece in the 2005 Linden Postcard Show, a historical reference, in this instance to the Hans Holbien Jnr. painting The Ambassadors.”

The 2nd Prize, the Dog’s Bar Award of $2,000 went to Anna Hoyle for her work Magic Sucker & the Patio Interloper #3, for her whimsical contemporary Japonaiserie in ink on paper. 3rd Prize of $750 worth of art materials from Art Spectrum Finest Colours went to St Kilda artist Elizabeth James for Yi, an aerial view of an inner city scene depicted in watercolour on silk.

Linden Director Amy Barrett-Lennard said that “with almost 3,000 art works this year’s show was particularly difficult to judge. The three judges, however, did a superb job and made very considered and, as it turns out, popular choices”

As always, the works in the show reveal a real diversity of subject matter and medium. In addition to the major prize winners, six works were also chosen to be reproduced as postcards, which is where the show gets its name. These are sure to intrigue as they depict scenes as varied as a “landscape” of fish and vegetables to a dancing female figurine which has be-headed another and is titled “It’s Murder on the Dance Floor”

Immerse yourself in art at The 2005 Linden Postcard Show

5 February – 19 March 2005

The 14th Annual Linden Postcard Show opens 5 February 2005 with a whopping 3,000 contemporary art works by more than 1,000 artists from all over Australia. Each artist is vying for a share in this year's massive $9,000 prize pool of:

1st Prize	Bendigo Bank Award	$5,000 cash
2nd Prize	Dogs Bar Award	$2,000 cash
3rd Prize	Arts Spectrum Finest Colours Award	$750 worth of art materials

In addition to the above, 6 works are to be selected to be reproduced as Linden postcards with each artist receiving $250. The collection of winning postcards now numbers ninety-seven.

The Postcard Show is one of the few open entry award exhibitions left in Australia in which every entry is exhibited, revealing an enormous diversity of art forms and, as always, some new talent. This year’s judging will be particularly difficult but Linden’s 2005 judges: Naomi Cass, Director of Centre for Contemporary Photography, Georgina Safe, Arts Writer for The Australian and artist Sean Meilak, are up to the challenge

All works are for sale and the small format means the work is reasonably priced. You might find a great work by an established artist such as Prudence Flint, winner of the 2004 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize; or something by internationally acclaimed artist Jenny Watson or irrepressible Indigenous artist Gordon Hookey. You can most certainly pick up a treasure by an up and coming young artist or just something that really catches your eye.

Thanks to a growing interest in the show and Linden’s new partnership with Bendigo Bank, the Postcard Show has taken on a truly national flavour with entries from Toorak to Toowoomba and from Wagga Wagga to Woodend.

Opening celebrations are from 1-6pm on Saturday 5 February with bar and live music by Teen Wolf and The Young Professionals. The 2005 Postcard Show awards will be announced at 2pm. Everyone is welcome! The Postcard Show continues until Saturday 19 March with Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Sunday 1pm- 6pm.

Norbert Loeffler, Art Theory & History Lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts and well known authority on Australian Art will talk about collecting art as a creative exercise, the pleasures of collecting small work and collecting on a small budget. Speaking from both a professional and personal viewpoint he will explain how enjoyable, easy and affordable collecting art can be.
