Exploring Movement in Sculpture

Inspired by Anna Révész exhibition that explores movement through a series of black and white photographs and three sculptural works, Create a balancing sculpture that explores movement and form. Capture this using a camera, playing with light and composition to create depth and dimensions with shadows or just using natural light.


Materials needed:

  • Small piece of wood or small part of a branch
  • Metal wire
  • Pliers to cut wire
  • Dried flowers, flowers from garden or leaves.
  • 1 x Nail
  • 1 x hammer
  • Plain coloured bedding sheet or plain coloured wall used as a back drop
  • Lamp
  • Phone or camera

Step 1 

  • Place nail in the center of the wood and hammer a hole in for the metal wire to be placed into and be able to stay in place firmly
  • Place two to three pieces of wire in the centre of the wood – if it’s not holding in place you may need to secure it using a small amount of super glue.
  • Place found natural pieces ( flowers or leaves ) onto pieces of wire.
  • Mold the wire to your desired shape
  • Try to explore balance, movement and form when placing these pieces on to the wire



Step 2

  • Set up a space that you can take photos of your sculpture.

  • Start taking photos of your sculpture
  • Exploring the following
  • Movement and shapes
  • Textures, patterns and form
  • Composition
  • Lighting
  • Take some photos using natural lighting
  • Take some photos looking at shadows, you can take these photos at night with a lamp or light on or during the day with a lamp directed at your sculpture.


Step 4

  • If you have access to editing your photos into black and white, the black and white will assist in emphasising the any shadows created exploring lighting.
  • Some free apps that can be downloaded to edit photos directly from your phone are the following
  • VSCO
  • Snapseed
  • Prisma Photo Editor. Available on iOS and Android
