ORGANIC ORIGAMI LAMP SHADE

This year’s Design Fringe focuses on the theme of “home”. The home can be an endless source of inspiration for design. Create an organic origami lamp shade for your house. Learn the art of folding paper using simple origami techniques. Follow this step by step activity to make your own origami lamp shade.


Materials needed:

  • Recycled paper, paper wrapping from flowers, cut up magazines, old wrapping paper
  • Pencil 
  • Sticking tape or glue 
  • Scissors 
  • Lamp 
  • Large dish to trace

Step 1 

  • Place large dish onto paper 
  • Trace around the dish
  • Repeat this step
  • Cut the two circles out 
  • Fold each circle in the centre 
  • Cut paper in half 


Step 2

  • Fold the half into another half and slowly fold the paper in
  • Keep slowly folding in a small section at a time in towards the centre 
  • Repeat this step on all four half pieces

Step 3

  • Place all the four halves together
  • Glue or sticky tape the four sections together


Step 4

  • Make sure you leave a whole big enough at the centre /in the middle of your circle to allow the lamp to be threaded through.
