IMAGE > Catherine Bell, Wishbone (2020). Hand-sculpted from florist Oasis foam. Courtesy the artist and Sutton Gallery.
In this hands-on creative workshop, participants will explore bones as clues to the past and reminders of the lives that came before us. Catherine Bell will introduce the sculpted artefacts made from florist oasis foam in her exhibition, alongside examples of how ancient civilisations used creative approaches to remember and honour the dead.
Through touch, making and discovery, participants will explore change, impermanence and remembrance. Using their hands to sculpt florist oasis foam, they will gradually uncover the shape of a bone hidden within the material, much as archaeologists excavate the earth to discover dinosaur fossils or the remains of ancient civilizations.
This process offers a gentle, accessible way to consider how objects and remains connect us to the past, inviting participants to reflect on life, death and the ways we remember those who have died.
Suitable for ages 8-16.
Cost to attend is FREE, but bookings are required to assist with materials and resourcing.
