Gian Manik’s exhibition Fantasy Chamber comprises a new series of paintings which extend the artist’s ongoing investigation of queer and
Eastern identity, art history and self-portraiture, made and presented in conversation with Linden’s grand Victorian architecture.
In 2023 Linden New Art launched JUNCTURE, a major new art prize for Australian mid-career contemporary artists. Two artists are each awarded $20,000 to support their practice, and twelve months in which to develop new work to be presented as a solo exhibition at Linden New Art.. The recipients of this year's award are Gian Manik and Sarah CrowEST.
Gian Manik is a Naarm-based artist whose dextrous approach to image-making is characterised by an irreverence for genre and driven by a compulsion to paint. Interested in undermining the colonial properties of historical painting, Manik ambiguates tradition through the representation of multivalent or tangential subjects. Manik received a BFA (Honours) from Curtin University in 2011. After relocating to Naarm/Melbourne, the artist completed a Master of Fine Art (Honours) at Monash University in 2012. Since then, he has exhibited widely across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand in institutional and commercial contexts. He has received institutional commissions from the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Perth Institute for Contemporary Art, and Gus Fisher Gallery, University of Auckland, among others. Additionally, his work has been featured in significant group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Ngununggula, and the Art Gallery of South Australia .
