Join us for the opening of Bernhard Sachs: After History, a major exhibition honouring the work and influence of Melbourne artist and academic Bernhard Sachs (1954–2022). Known for his expansive practice spanning drawing, collage, painting, and beyond, Sachs wove European art, history, and philosophy into deeply personal works. Rather than a traditional retrospective, this exhibition draws from his studio, highlighting his ongoing process of revisiting and reworking ideas over time.
A parallel display will feature works by artists whom Sachs mentored, recognising his profound impact on multiple generations of Melbourne’s
art community.
As part of the opening of Bernhard Sachs: After History, artist-musicians John Abbate, Jon Cattapan, David Palliser, Veronica
Kent and Kirsten Rann (joined by Deborah Wargon) will recreate their performance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust,
originally staged as part of Sachs’ PhD exhibition at Margaret Lawrence Gallery, VCA, in 2009.
