Labyrinths are intricate and disorientating structures in which it is easy to lose our way. As man-made structures they have often represented artistic ingenuity, though they can also appear in nature. The brain, for example, with its convoluted folds, can be seen as a labyrinth. There is also a labyrinth in the inner ear, in that part of the ear that is responsible for our sense of balance.
Inside the labyrinth, in the dark, we move hesitantly, one step after another, one syllable after another (Lab… Uh… Rinths…), not knowing what might be around the corner, or if we will ever escape. And yet, we also know that every labyrinth presents a doubling of perspectives. From within, with vision restricted, we experience fear and confusion, but from without, or above, there is the possibility of seeing the whole, of understanding the plan, or acknowledging its artistry. The labyrinth presents a contrast between the process of moving along a difficult path and the realization of a transcendental perspective. It may serve as a metaphor for our journey through life, for the attainment of spiritual insight, or for the creative processes of an artist.
