Hourglass

Create a colourful Hourglass to measure moments of time. Historically made with sand this Hourglass will be made with rice. There will be a few factors to consider when making your own Hourglass, the quantity and coarseness of the rice, the size of your bottles and the length of the neck of your bottles, this will all help determine the duration of the time – will it pass quickly or very slowly?

    Step 3

    • Once rice is dry place into a food processor – Blend very lightly, just enough for the rice to be the consistency of couscous or finer if you want time to pass slower.
    • Trace the top of the bottle onto a piece of cardboard – cut this out, insert a small hole in the middle, this is where the rice will fall through in the centre, the smaller the hole is the slower your rice will fall.
    • Stick this piece on top of the bottle top

    Step 4

    • Stick this piece on top of the bottle top
    • Place the other bottle upside down on top of the other bottle with the rice in it
    • Using Adhesive tap to join the two bottle together
