Outdoor Still Life Painting

Create a miniature still life painting inspired by Natasha Bieniek’s exhibition Halcyon. Natasha’s paintings employ meticulous detail and express her deep appreciation for gardens. Set up your picnic in your favourite outdoor surrounding, focus in on a detail and capture this through a still life painting. You can always take a photo and work from this too.

Materials needed:

  • Water colour paper, thicker gsm paper
  • Pencil
  • Acrylic Paint or Watercolours

Step 1

  • You can set up a picnic and focus on painting this or set up some objects found around your home
  • Try to place objects so that some overlap, showing clearly what's in front of what.
  • Form connections that lead the eye around the composition.
  • Change the arrangement of the objects looking for the most pleasing one.
  • You may take things out or add others in.

Step 2

  • Once you are happy with the composition you can take a photo of it for reference, especially if it is a picnic.
  • Draw out a rough sketch to guide you
  • Consider what angle you would like to focus on

Step 3

  • Slowly start painting your picture.
  • Look at the light
  • Look at the background
  • Consider the mood of your work, are the colours bright and light or are they dark and are there shadows
  • You can choose to focus in on a particular area or you can paint the whole scene
