Seagulls are an icon of St Kilda. The St Kilda Beach and Pier would look very different without them. Seagulls are often viewed as symbols of intelligence and adaptability, having demonstrated survival and resilience by taking advantage of opportunities amongst difficult environments.

While we, as humans, have limited ability to communicate with seagulls through speech, the connection through body language is amazing. Seagulls use their body language to communicate emotions in a similar way to us. This exhibition,  Seagulls of St Kilda, is a collection of photographs taken along the St Kilda beach side area and they display the above connection that we have with seagulls. Walking along the beach allows the seagulls to be photographed against dreamy reflective surfaces, levitating in the wind and playing along the pier.

The 25 photographs take us through a process showing how seagulls are a St Kilda icon; seagull frustration, life in the clouds, when life goes wrong, and some other precious moments captured on camera.

About the Artist
The creator of this exhibition, Colin Lill, is a photography hobbyist who likes to capture the unexpected with his camera. The St Kilda is an ideal location for such activity. Some of the photos rely on the capturing seagulls on a reflective surface to create an image of seagulls in the clouds.
