Autumn Flora Sculptures

Artist Leith Maguire is interested in the way that living things exist in and move through the natural world. Part of Leith’s artistic practice highlights her own personal encounters with the landscape, flora and fauna. As autumn sets in and the leaves begin to change colour, kids are invited to create fauna-based sculptures made from autumn flora elements.

Inspired by Linden past exhibition Leith Maguire, Heads or Tails (2016).

Step 1

Go for a walk around your backyard with a picture of your favourite animal. Think of all the parts that make this animal such as the legs, ears, eyes and toes. Does it have feathers or fur, beak or snout, claws or wings? As you look at each part of your animal, try and find a piece of plant life that you think best represents this part.

Step 2

Once you have collected all your parts spread them out on a table. Referring to the picture of your animal, begin to arrange the plant life you have collected onto your piece of card in a depiction of your animal. Use scissors to trim any of the plant life you’ve collected so it resembles the different parts of your animal and use tweezers to place any delicate parts into position.

Step 3

Now that you know what plant life you are using to create your animal sculpture and you are happy with your arrangement, use your tweezers to carefully take each piece, dab a spot of glue onto it and glue it down onto your card. Leave it to dry. Tip: Start with the body or torso of the animal.
