In her first exhibition in Melbourne following a decade living in Asia, Merryn Trevethan explores the strong feeling of dislocation which resulted from her time overseas. Are We There Yet? presents a site responsive wall-drawing, and new paintings created in her former Hong Kong studio. The viewer is immersed in a spatially ambiguous world, reflecting the dislocation of navigating our lived environment; both in-real-life and virtually through screens. Referencing the often-overlooked systems that underpin our lives, Are We There Yet? teases out how perceptions of them change over time, informed by personal experiences as well as external forces, such as the political environment, the digital landscape, climate change and social context. It considers the role of memory and the influence of technology on our sense of space, time, and colour, acting as both an invitation to relate to, and be critical of, our surroundings, and a reminder to find joy in the moment. Through this exhibition, Merryn explores feelings of being cut off from home, of never having enough time with your loved ones, and the head-spinning feeling of not knowing where home is anymore, while constantly asking the question…Are We There Yet?
Based in Asia for the past decade, Merryn’s work is inspired by the constantly changing structure of cities and considers the human response
to the built environment. She examines how we see, navigate, and record our experiences of urban spaces.
Recent exhibitions include Postmodern Tales, H Queens, Hong Kong; Unfold City, Jockey Club Creative Arts Gallery, HK; Superhuman Expedition, Arthub Studios, London; and a collaborative exhibition with Sebastian Mary Tay at Comma Space, Singapore.
